I’ve rewritten my resume more times than I can count.

Not because I lack experience—but because I’ve been told, in different ways, that my experience doesn’t “fit.”

If you’re a military veteran or a military spouse, this probably resonates.

The Reality Behind “You’re Overqualified… or Not Quite Right”

From the outside, it might look like veterans and military spouses have strong employment outcomes. Unemployment rates for veterans are not much different than the rates for non-veterans. But unemployment rates alone do not tell the full story of the veteran experience in the civilian job market.

UNDERemployment—the quiet mismatch between capability and opportunity—is where the real struggle lives.

  • Over 60% of veterans are underemployed, working in roles that don’t match their skills or experience (William & Mary School of Business)

  • Veterans are up to 38% more likely to be underemployed than the general population (va.gov)

  • Nearly 70% of veterans report difficulty transitioning into civilian employment (compacts.csg.org)

And for military spouses, the gap between capability and opportunity is even more visible. The educational attainment of military spouses is notable, with 89% having completed post-secondary education. (Source: National Archives) Even so, employers are not taking advantage of spouse talent.

  • Military spouse unemployment sits around 20–23%, roughly 4–5x higher than civilians (National Military Family Association)

  • Some studies show unemployment rates as high as 22%–38% depending on conditions (Hiring Our Heroes)

  • Even when employed, spouses earn significantly less—up to 42% lower income than civilian counterparts (ivmf.syracuse.edu)

So no—it’s not a motivation issue.

It’s not a talent issue.

It’s a recognition issue.
